Academic Advising

What is my GPA?

Find out your grade point average with our GPA Calculator.

Academic advisors are available to assist with:

  • Developing realistic life goals
  • Creating overall academic plan
  • Course choices and registration
  • Transfer services

All new, incoming students must meet with an academic advisor before they enroll for the first time at HCC as part of the SOAR experience. Advisors help students plan each semester's program of courses, educational plan and life plan. Advisors refer students, as needed, to inside and outside resources and are advocates for the student in all matters.

When do I first meet with an academic advisor?

All new students will meet with an academic advisor as part of the enrollment process. When you meet with an academic advisor depends upon whether you plan to be a new full-time or part-time student. Before meeting with an advisor, students should secure a copy of the current course schedule, have an idea of courses they plan to take and be able to discuss their interests and goals with the advisor. Students should also become familiar with general education, graduation and program requirements. Find answers to frequently asked questions about academic advising.

Full-Time Students

Full-time students (those enrolling in 4 or more classes; 12 or more credit hours) who are new to Heartland Community College will meet with an advisor during their SOAR session. The advisement appointment is scheduled as part of the SOAR session. Before meeting with an advisor, full-time students should secure a copy of the current course schedule, have an idea of courses they plan to take and be able to discuss their interests and goals with the advisor. Students should also become familiar with general education, graduation and program requirements.

Part-Time Students

Part-time students (those enrolling in 3 or fewer classes; 11 or fewer credit hours) who are new to Heartland must schedule an appointment with an advisor after completing the online SOAR session and taking the basic skills assessment.

Those planning on transferring Heartland credits should make an appointment with an academic advisor to discuss how their credits will transfer.
