2012 Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Robers Mesidor is the 2012 recipient of the Alumni Association Scholarship. The scholarship will help Mesidor offset the costs of schooling and allow him to focus on his goals and dreams.

Mesidor is a graduate of Dunbar High School located in Fort Myers, Florida. In high school, Mesidor was active in the JROTC, where he served others at the Edison Home, blood drives, heart walks, and other community service projects. After high school, Mesidor knew his educational journey was not over. After he was introduced to Bloomington-based businessman William Masters, owner of William Masters Inc., the philanthropist who supports programs to help single mothers moved Mesidor from Florida to Bloomington-Normal and paid for his first semester of college at Heartland. During this time, Masters introduced Mesidor to his church community and encouraged him to work hard to pursue his dream of one day doing research that leads to a cure for cancer. Since then, Mesidor says he has not looked back. He has applied for several scholarships to fund his schooling and he has maintained an excellent grade point average.

In addressing the Heartland Community College Alumni Association Board of Directors to thank the group for the scholarship, Mesidor said, "I am going to continue praying and just thanking everyone that helps me on the way. I just want you to know it's going to be a special part of me. I won't ever forget it."

Mesidor recently attended the Alumni/Career Services event "Pizza with the Pros" to learn more about what it takes to pursue his career. He plans to attend the University of Illinois after Heartland to study Nuclear Medicine. He has aspirations of becoming a doctor and using his degree to make a difference in the world of cancer research.
