2013 Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Charles Smith is the 2013 recipient of the Alumni Association Scholarship. This scholarship will help Smith offset the financial costs of fulfilling his dreams of becoming a psychiatric nurse.

Currently located in Lincoln, IL., Smith is a nontraditional student who graduated from Heartland in 2002 with his associate's degree. While attending Heartland as a full-time student and working a full-time job, Smith thought business management was the right path for him to take at the time. Smith planned to complete a bachelor's degree at a four-year university but found it was not the right fit. After taking a break from school and working full-time for a few years, Smith decided that he would like to pursue an education in nursing in hopes of becoming a psychiatric nurse.

"It is a great honor to be awarded the scholarship. I have a lot of respect for the College and the staff. I think the quality of teachers is excellent, and the academic advisement team always gives great advice," said Smith, "In addition, I live out of town and it makes it more affordable to go back to school due to the high price of gas."

Smith plans to finish his prerequisites and transfer into HCC's nursing program and pursue his bachelor's degree.

"I would like to help people cope with the everyday struggle of mental illness so they are able to live more happy and productive lives."
