Kent Casson, Former Program Director WJEZ FM Radio now owner operator of centralillnoisfarmnetwwork.com
The Heartland Community College Alumni Association has given its 2012 Alumni Service Award to a former area broadcaster who has tirelessly promoted Heartland Community College through his use of the radio airwaves. The Alumni Service Award is given to an individual in recognition of his or her service to the College and contributions to the local community. The award was presented to radio broadcaster Kent Casson '03 before the first pitch at Heartland Night at the CornBelters on Friday, August 31, 2012.
Casson recently retired from broadcasting full-time as News and Program Director for WJEZ FM in Pontiac where he was responsible for the 24/7 operation. He anchored morning newscasts, filled in as a regular talk host and occasionally anchored news for WJBC AM/FM in Bloomington as part of the five-station cluster owned by Cumulus Broadcasting. As a reporter who gathered day-to-day news that informs Livingston and McLean County residents, Casson provided a valuable community service and he often went far beyond the call, working many long hours.
His nominator, Heartland Community College Archivist and McLean County Board member Don Cavallini wrote, "Kent is a quality person of strong character who adds to the credibility of WJEZ among listeners in Livingston County." Co-worker Linda Fry adds, "Kent's hard work and dedication are admired by many, many people throughout the county but most especially by the people who have the honor of working with him each day."
In addition, Casson provided an invaluable service to Heartland Community College with monthly interviews that promoted Heartland classes, events, and new initiatives.
Heartland President, Dr. Allen Goben said of Kent, "He has always been an outstanding advocate for Heartland, and we're thankful he shares his enthusiasm with the Pontiac community." He added, "Kent's support has grown uniformly with the College, and his endorsement is a priceless contribution to the success of so many of our students and to our diverse community partners. Upon learning of the award, Kent was surprised. "I am so humbled by this and I really appreciate those who nominated me. I so enjoyed my time working at the radio station and doing all that I could to support Heartland which gave me such a great foundation and really led to my success as a broadcaster." Casson recently left the station to focus more on his farm website centralilinoisfarmnetwork.com and to have more of a hand in his family's farming operation in Livingston County.
