The Alumni Association (HCCAA) will yearly recognize someone who through their accomplishments, both personally and professionally, personifies the values of the College which include a "can-do" attitude, a respect for diversity, and ethical decision-making among others.
Deborah Fedor is an example of a non-traditional student who found, as she told graduates, "It's never too late to learn, never too late to work toward achieving your dream." Fedor was a Presidential Scholar and earned an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Nursing from Heartland in 1996. Combining her Heartland education with a passion for public service, Deborah spent most of her career as a pediatric nurse, taking care of children right here in our community. In addition, Deborah helped to improve regional immunization rates not only as a nurse, but also as an advocate for public health at the McLean County Health Department.
Deborah Fedor has also made a considerable commitment to providing educational opportunities at the local level. She and her husband David have established two scholarships, including one for a Heartland Community College Nursing student and another for students involved in the HALO (Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities) program. Her nominator, Executive Director Development and the HCC Foundation, Chris Downing, says Deborah's story reminds us that if we are driven to succeed by our passions, we can do amazing things to enhance our own lives, and to better the lives of those around us.
