Study Skills Handout
Using Note Cards

The handout below is just one of the many study skills handouts available through the Tutoring Center. If you are having trouble with study skills of any kind, or if you have questions about study skills that are not addressed here, stop in the Student Commons Building, Room 1300, at the Normal campus and talk to a tutor. He/she can provide additional handouts, help you recognize your strengths and weaknesses and help you formulate a plan to develop effective study strategies. Find out when tutors for various courses are available in Pontiac or Lincoln by contacting the receptionist in Pontiac (815-842-6777) or Lincoln (217-735-1731).

Using Note Cards

Creating and using note cards can provide you with valuable learning opportunities that can stimulate all learning modalities. The use of note cards can alleviate anxiety about remembering facts throughout an academic term. An additional advantage of using note cards is to present written information out of sequence, which can help you learn material free of association to the information it proceeds and follows.

Suggested Procedures:

  1. 3"X5" cards can hold important information from notes and reading. Write the cue or question on one side of the card andwrite the definition, description, or answer on the other side.

  2. Begin compiling the cards early in the term. Carry the cards with you and review the information many times during the day and evening.

  3. The information that does not come to mind readily can be reviewed more often or placed in a "critical" stack. Repetition is the best way to learn material that is difficult for you to remember.

  4. Categorization of note cards in various ways can provide an innovative to review vocabulary and to stimulate critical thinking.
