Skills Handout: How to Write a Research Paper
Step 6 -- Preparing the Final Draft
The
handout below is just one of the many study
skills handouts available through the Tutoring Center. If you
are having trouble with study skills of any kind, or if you have
questions about study skills that are not addressed here, stop in
the Student Commons Building, Room 1300, at the Normal campus and
talk to a tutor. He/she can provide additional handouts, help you
recognize your strengths and weaknesses and help you formulate a
plan to develop effective study strategies. To find out when tutors
for various courses are available in Pontiac
or Lincoln

Guidelines
on How to Write a Research Paper are broken down into
the following steps.
Step
6: Preparing the Final Draft
Type
your paper as assigned (Refer to the format required by your
instructor.)
- Present
a paper that is neat and attractive.
- Use
white, #20 paper, 81/2-by 11-inches.
- Type
on one side only.
- Create
header at the right hand margin; last name, leave a space for
page number.
- Double
space your document.
- Set
one inch margins all around.
- Type
your heading at left hand margin.
- Center
the title above your text.
- Indent
all paragraphs half an inch (5 spaces).
- Indent
set-off quotations one inch (10 spaces).
- Label
tables and other figures and give an Arabic number and a caption.
- Leave
space for footnotes and endnotes when necessary.
- Prepare
your works cited page according to format guidelines for your
documentation style.
Proofread
your paper. (Although much of this was done in the revising
step, check again!)
- Review
organization of paper.
- Check
introduction, beginning of each section, and conclusion for statement
of position.
- Check
spelling.
- Check
grammar and mechanics.
- Check
punctuation,
- Find
missing or extra words.
- Review
citations or references.
- Select
a final title.
- Prepare
a title page if required.
- Prepare
your table of contents if required.
- Prepare
your References or Works Cited page according to assigned format.
Prepare
your portfolio or binder.
- Staple
the upper left hand corner of your paper unless directed to use
paper clip.
- Check
with your instructor about rules for your portfolio or binder.
Turn
your paper in.
- Turn
your paper in by the deadline.
- Include
all your resource materials as directed by instructor (photocopies,
note cards, etc.).
- Do
not turn in your paper until it is error free.
