Types of Tutoring

Learning assistance is available in various forms at no cost to Heartland students at the Tutoring and Testing Center in Normal and also in Pontiac and Lincoln. Trained tutors are available at convenient times throughout the week. Study groups, group tutoring facilitated by a specially-trained tutor, are also available by request. For more information about tutoring services available at each location, please call the Tutoring and Testing Center in Normal at (309) 268-8231; the Pontiac Center (815) 842-6777; or the Lincoln Center (217) 735-1731.

Types of Tutoring

Appointment tutoring

In Normal, individuals and small groups of students may schedule regular one-hour appointments with an appointment tutor. Because of the great demand for appointment tutoring and because of the limited availability of appointments, students may make a maximum of two regularly-scheduled tutoring sessions each week. Students wishing to make an appointment need to do so in advance by calling (309-268-8231) or stopping by the Tutoring Center (SCB 1300).

Drop-in tutoring

In Lincoln and Pontiac, tutors work on a drop-in basis only. Drop-in tutors do not take appointments and are available on a first come, first served basis. You can find out when tutors are available in Lincoln (217-735-1731) and Pontiac (815-842-6777) by contacting the receptionist at that location.

On-Line tutoring

Students in need of clarification of a particular concept or an answer to a specific question for an English or Mathematics course may want to seek the assistance of an on-line tutor. The Tutor Program suggests working face-to-face with a tutor on campus, but on-line tutoring may suffice for specific questions. On-line tutors will respond to students within 48 hours of submissions.

Study groups

Groups of three or more students enrolled in a particular section of a course may request the assistance of a study group facilitator, a tutor who will help them learn course material. Students wishing to request a study group facilitator must identify a weekly meeting time at which all members can attend, complete a "Study Group Request" form, and submit the completed form to the Coordinator of Tutor Support Services. If you would like to start a study group and have it facilitated by a tutor, click here to print a Study Group Request form. Make sure you follow the directions carefully when completing the form.

In-class tutoring

In class tutors attend each class session in certain courses (e.g., ENGL 094, READ 070) so that they might work with the instructor to provide students with the support necessary for each student to achieve success. In-class tutors are also available during specially-designated drop-in hours at the ASC to assist students from these courses.
