Constitution Exam

To graduate with a two-year degree from Heartland Community College, students must satisfy the constitution requirement. This exam is available to Heartland students only.

You may need to take the Constitution exam if you:

  • Did not graduate from an Illinois high school, GED program or university
  • Did not take and pass an appropriate government course

Scheduling:

To schedule the Constitution exam, contact Joan Newgren at (309) 268-8057 or Teal Kaufman at (309)268-8058. There is no charge for the exam. Please note: This exam is available to Heartland Community College students only.

The exam covers:

  • The United States Constitution
  • The Illinois Constitution
  • The Declaration of Independence
  • The Flag

Format:

A paper/pencil test with 79 short-answer, multiple choice and true/false questions.

Scoring:

A total of 53 correct answers is needed to pass with at least half correct in designated sections.

Preparation:

A study guide called Better Government by Louis Sigalos may be purchased at the Heartland Campus Bookstore for approximately $10. Ask the staff for help in locating the guide.

The HCC Library has a copy of Better Government that can be checked out, and an additional copy is located in the reference section.

Tutoring is available through the Tutor Program for students desiring assistance in preparing for the examination. Contact the Tutor Program at the Academic Support Center in Normal at (309) 268-8230.
