FREN 101: French I

Prerequisite(s):
-Placement at college level English OR
-Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 99/101
AND
-Placement at college reading

A beginning course in French, with emphasis on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Basic vocabulary, essentials of French grammar and syntax, correct pronunciation and intonation, and the use of actual speech patterns are covered. Students with two or more years of high school French should not enroll in FREN 101. 4 credit hours

FREN 102: French II

Prerequisite(s):
-Completion of FREN 101 OR
-Pass FREN 101 proficiency exam
AND
-Placement at college level English OR
-Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 099/101
AND
-Placement at college level reading

A continuation of French I, with emphasis on expanding the basic conversational vocabulary and more detailed study of grammatical principles and syntactic patterns. 4 credit hours

FREN 201: French III

Prerequisite(s):
-Completion of FREN 102 with a grade of C or better
AND
-Placement at college level English OR
-Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 99/101
AND
-Placement at college level reading

Intensive practice in conversation and composition, combined with a review of grammatical and syntactic principles to attain advanced intermediate proficiency in speaking, writing, and reading in French. 4 credit hours

FREN 202: French IV

Prerequisite(s):
-Completion of FREN 201 with a grade of C or better
AND
-Placement at college level English OR
-Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 099/101
AND
-Placement at college level reading

This course is a continuation of FREN 201, with emphasis on expanding the basic conversational vocabulary and more detailed study of grammatical principles and syntactic patterns, along with an expansion of knowledge of French culture as appropriate for speaking and behaving effectively with native speakers. Activities include class reading of short stories, plays, poetry and other literary forms as an introduction to French literature. 4 credit hours
