Overview:
The Assessment Committee (AC) is an informal committee consisting
of faculty, staff, and administrators. However, the
predominant membership is that of the faculty as assessment should
be faculty driven. The AC meets on every other Friday
(opposite of CAS meetings) during the fall and spring semesters at
2pm. Meetings are open to anyone at HCC, last no more than one
hour, and center around various topics including new courses and the
promotion of assessment.
Membership on the AC by full-time faculty is a two year
commitment and are elected or selected by their division each spring
when terms expire. In addition, several adjunct faculty
members have volunteered their time to be on the committee.
The Chair and Vice Chair terms are also for two years to insure
continuity of the AC.
New Courses:
One of the requirements set forth by the Curriculum &
Academic Standards committee is that the AC shall review and approve
the new course before CAS approval occurs (see step #2 of the Course
Development checklist). In response to this, the AC and CAS
have recommended a four week cycle for new courses.
- Week
#1 – first reading at AC.
Master syllabi should be submitted to AC Chair at least
24 hours before the meeting.
- Week
#2 – first reading at CAS.
- Week
#3 – second reading at AC and hopefully approval of course.
- Week
#4 – second reading at CAS.
CAS will not give final approval until AC Chair has given
final approval.
While this may seem to be a lengthy process, many AC and CAS
members recognize that a stronger product will result from
this. For more about what the AC is examining, continue on to
the link below.
