Community Education at Heartland Community College offers daytime and evening classes designed for students age 55 or better. They are taught by friendly, knowledgeable instructors with personal attention. Most of our classes are hands-on classes. Learn new skills, start a new hobby and experience a new you!
Join us as we help you navigate your next venture in your life, retirement. This 6 part series will touch on every aspect you need to be prepared during this very important second stage of your life. Topics include:
Planning for Transition
Instructor and Life Coach, Jackie Langhoff, will focus on the factors of a person’s life wheel including: fun, financial, relationship, and more. Jackie will help you assess your status on the life wheel and develop strategies for providing more balance in areas that are not satisfactory. We will discuss expectations for retirement and the influence of society’s emphasis on youth. Tips on social networking will also be included with social networking expert, Larry Butts.
Personal Assessment and Your Next Career
Heartland Career Services Coordinator, Sara Baker, will help assess your personality strengths in order to get you started on your next career path. Your results will be interpreted in order to give you the edge on what field best suits you. Former City Manager Dave Anderson will join us to explain how he approached retirement and turned a hobby into a small business.
Volunteer Opportunities & Next Steps
Join YWCA’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program Coordinator, Colleen Steinberg, to discuss numerous community volunteer options. You will learn how to match what is right for you, including the factors you need to consider for ensuring a positive volunteer experience. You will learn the do’s and don’ts to volunteering to get you connected with a rewarding endeavor. Also meet super volunteer, Pam Rich who will share her vast experience with multiple volunteer stints.
Live Well, Be Well
In this class, we will cover the transition to Medicare/Medicaid in an easy to understand setting. We will also discuss ways to assess your overall health, your “real age” based on what your daily activity, and how to talk to your healthcare physician to be your own advocate in your life. And we will meet some of Heartland’s Smart Steppers to give us their take on how staying active has helped improve their lifestyle and how it can improve yours too.
Leaving Your Legacy
Come learn about the Five Wishes approach to planning your legacy for your loved ones. You will discover the importance to leaving the mark you want behind for future generations. We will help you take the guessing out of how you want to age with dignity. Also, Financial guru, Dennis Kagel, will give us a brief analysis of financial planning for retirement making this an all-around legacy course to get you prepared.

Let’s celebrate all your hard work, new goals, and new friends with a fun and relaxed social with the experts. You will speak one-on-one will our experts ranging from physicians, life coaches, entrepreneurs, volunteers, and more. We will enjoy light appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages in this candid and informative setting.
