Traffic Safety School

The Heartland Community College Traffic Safety Program offers Defensive Driving Courses (both 4 and 8 hour) to individuals who have received a traffic citation in McLean County. Our courses follow the curriculum developed by NCTI (National Curriculum & Training Institute). If you have received a traffic citation and are not required to appear in court, you may be eligible for this program. You are only allowed to complete the course one time in a 12-month period.

Important Class Completion Guidelines

The McLean County Circuit Court requires that you complete your traffic safety school class at least 30 days before your supervision termination date. Failure to complete your class at least 30 days BEFORE your supervision termination date will result in a conviction being placed on your record. 

If you are taking the class outside of McLean county, you must mail the ORIGINAL certificate of completion to our office no later than 30 days before your termination date.  Failure to verify the completion of your class will result in a conviction being placed on your record.

Am I Eligible for Traffic Safety School?

Read this before enrolling in Traffic Safety School. If you have questions, contact Traffic Safety School at (309) 268-8159. You are not eligible for Traffic Safety School:

  • If you have enrolled in or taken the 4 hour Traffic Safety School class in the last 12 months then you are not eligible to take the 4 hour class again. All fees paid are nonrefundable.
  • If you are under 18, you are not eligible to attend Traffic Safety School unless you have been to Court and have a Judge’s order.
  • If you hold a CDL (Commercial Drivers License), you are not eligible to attend Traffic Safety School unless you have been to Court and have a Judge’s order.

Need to take the class outside of McLean County?

If you choose to take the course elsewhere, you are responsible for:

  • Finding somewhere to take it. Here is a list of Recognized Traffic Safety Programs (available in PDF format, 18.9 KB, 2 pages)*.
  • Paying any fees that they may charge.
  • Making sure that the course is certified by an approved provider such as National Curriculum & Training Institute, National Safety Council, Northwestern University, AAA. If you have questions about whether a course will qualify, please contact us at (309) 268-8159.
  • Completing the course and mailing your certificate of completion to:
