Get Started as a College N.O.W. Student

There are new opportunities waiting for current high school students who desire to participate in the program. Choose the path below that best describes your situation:

PATH 1: I want to take college courses at my high school or career center.

  1. Talk to your high school or career center counselor/advisor regarding the appropriate course offerings available to you.
  2.  Complete and submit the general student HCC application for the correct starting term. (Aug = Fall, Jan = Spring)
    • Must be done 1 week prior to Step 3!
  3. Take the Basic Skills Assessment (COMPASS) on the scheduled day of testing at your high school or career center.
    • If you miss testing at your high school or career center, you should arrange to test at Heartland (Normal/Pontiac/Lincoln).
    • You must identify yourself as a high school student!
    • NOTE: Eligible ACT subscores exempt you from taking the Basic Skills Assessment (COMPASS) for certain courses.
  4. Submit a completed College N.O.W. Student Enrollment Form to your counselor/advisor.

FINAL PHASE: Your counselor/advisor will receive your results and will advise you regarding your eligibility for the courses you selected. Once your counselor/advisor includes you on the final course rosters, you will be enrolled into your college courses.

PATH 2: My high school or career center allows me to take college courses on Heartland's campus or online during a Fall and/or Spring term.

  1. Talk to your high school or career center counselor/advisor regarding the appropriate course offerings available to you that: 1) are scheduled on the HCC campus and 2) that would work well with your daily high school schedule.
  2. Complete and submit the general student HCC application for the correct starting term. (Aug = Fall, Jan = Spring)
    • Must be done prior to Step 3!
  3. Take the Basic Skills Assessment (COMPASS) at Heartland.
    • You must identify yourself as a high school student!
    • NOTE: Eligible ACT subscores can exempt you from taking the Basic Skills Assessment (COMPASS) for certain courses.
  4. Take your assessment results (or a copy of your ACT scores) and a completed College N.O.W. Student Enrollment Form to meet with a HCC Academic Advisor during drop-in hours to discuss eligibility for and enrollment into the courses you desire.

FINAL PHASE: Once you have submitted your completed College N.O.W. Student Enrollment Form, you will be enrolled into your college courses.
