
FILM 101: Introduction to Film Studies
Prerequisite: Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, ENGL 101 is strongly recommended. An examination of film as an art form and as a social practice, with attention given to aesthetics, genre, elements of visual storytelling, and criticism. The course will explore visual composition, movement, sound, editing, and ideology in selected American and foreign films. 3 HRS

FILM 296: Studies In Film
Prerequisite: Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, ENGL 101 is strongly recommended. An advanced course in film studies, including films from the genres of the western, film noir, the foreign film, the musical, the science fiction film and others. Each film will be considered by examining the constituent elements and formal qualities that are intrinsic to that particular film and the genre, as well as by studying the relationship of one film to another and to the societies from which they developed. Because topics and films studied will change each semester, FILM 296 may be repeated for a total of six credits. 3 HRS
