This certificate program is the mid-level of EMT training. Competencies of the EMT-Intermediate include but are not limited to the recognition, assessment, and management of medical emergencies under the direction of a physician. The EMT-Intermediate primarily provides pre-hospital emergency care to acutely ill or injured patients by ambulance services and mobile advanced life support units under medical command authority. While the EMT-Intermediate level has as its base the basic EMT program there are also certain proven clinical skills and knowledge to support the skills added to the basic program. The EMT-Intermediate program is not intended necessarily to be a stepping stone to the EMT-Paramedic level. This level does not conflict or compete with the EMT-Paramedic level; it is another level that exists as a result of different factors being emphasized.
Students interested in this certificate are required to meet with the Heartland Community College Program Assistant to Emergency Medical Services, Bob Reynolds, prior to registration to complete the Advanced EMT Certificate Pre-Requisite Checklist* (available in PDF format, 15.9 KB, 1 page).
*Note: You must download and install Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ in order to view and print the EMT checklist.
