8:00-4:15 p.m.; Reception to Follow
All members of the Illinois State University teaching community are invited to begin the spring semester with a day of rewarding, re-energizing, and thought-provoking conversations at the Seventh Annual Symposium on Teaching & Learning.
This year's theme is "Civic Engagement in Classrooms and Communities," and our keynote speaker is Dr. George Mehaffy, Vice President of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and founder of the American Democracy Project.
In keeping with this theme, we encourage faculty, teaching assistants, and professional staff to share the results of and insights gained from recent projects, research, and teaching experiences. Especially welcome are presentations addressing theme-related issues such as: What responsibilities do we have as educators in and for a democracy, and how do we meet them? What do we mean by 'civic' engagement? What do we mean by 'communities'? How is civic engagement similar to or different from other kinds of engagement? How do our notions of 'classroom' and 'community' intersect-and diverge? How can we model civic engagement for our students-and why should we?

Efforts to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast continue to raise questions that test our ability and commitment to put into practice the outcomes of a liberal education. How do we learn from past experiences, identify problems and opportunities, and implement credible solutions? How should we direct our efforts to prepare students to be responsible citizens and leaders in times both of crisis and relative tranquility? How do we apply the lessons of Katrina and Rita to the complex contexts of our own local communities and institutional missions?

The thirty-seventh annual conference of the International Society for Exploring Teaching and Learning (ISETL) will be in Atlanta, Georgia, from October 11-13, 2007. ISETL encourages college and university faculty and practitioners from all disciplines to develop, study, and apply learner-centered principles of teaching, learning, and assessment in innovative, yet effective and practical ways. The program committee invites proposals for a 50 minute presentation or for a poster session presentation that reflects these goals. We are especially interested in presentations and workshops that demonstrate practical and creative teaching and learning techniques based on personal experiences and/or research that will appeal to colleagues in several disciplines. We will also consider presentations on other topics relevant to the mission of ISETL. Preference will be given to presentations that promise to model alternative teaching methods and engage their audiences in activity and dialogue.

Civic Learning at the Intersections will highlight current research and promising practices pertaining to the creative integration of civic, diversity, and global work on campus and how this integration can strengthen student learning and help create new and sustaining institutional structures.
The conference will include a particular focus on articulating the aims and learning outcomes of civic engagement programs. These programs are widely embraced by colleges and universities, yet it is less clear to students and the public how they help students develop the competencies – e.g., critical thinking, analytical reasoning, intercultural competence, and written and oral communication – necessary to prepare graduates for future careers and active citizenship. Participants will have the opportunity to examine assessment practices and their potential value in strengthening the quality of civic learning at the intersections.

Purpose
The purpose of the conference is to be a real and virtual "commons" for college and university teachers, scholars, administrators, faculty developers, and others interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning as a focused, but expansive, evidence-based path for the improvement of teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
Theme: "A Rite of Inquiry and a Passage for Learning"
The scholarship of teaching and learning is a momentum of questioning assumptions about teaching and how students learn by means of inquiry into the pedagogical process. SoTL can be a scholarly ritual of such inquiry that leads to a re-conceptualization of what teaching is, and is not, and what learning is and can be. This theme emphasizes that SoTL is perhaps the most ready, steady way to improve teaching and learning in higher education today, making this conference an intellectual "commons" for all wanting to learn more about the research of teachers into teaching and about the integration and application of SoTL in academic careers and communities. The theme evokes the idea that teachers are essentially life-long learners about teaching and that SoTL stimulates the inherent curiosity of faculty to learn, know, understand, and apply. With that inquiry and desire to know is the faculty's experience with research methodologies that, in SoTL, are turned towards the teaching of the disciplines so they can be learned in the deepest ways possible. SoTL is inquiry and is a passage to a new, even transformed, vision of teaching.

The challenges facing higher education in preparing students for contemporary society are complex. Students need to be able to connect knowledge with choices and action, and integrate their learning across their general and specialized studies. AAC&U's recent report, College Learning for the New Global Century, calls for broad-based leadership to create campus cultures marked by an unwavering focus on the quality of student learning, by an ethic of continuous improvement, and by structures and rewards that support faculty and staff leadership on those issues. The traditional divisions—between academic affairs, student affairs, and the departments—inhibit educational effectiveness in a global and technologically advanced era where the integration of knowledge, practical skills, and personal and social responsibility will be essential to students’ future success. Making college learning goals transparent, integrating our work, and holding students and ourselves accountable for achieving the essential learning outcomes require greater collaboration across divisional lines.

Integrative Designs for General Education and Assessment will focus on ways that faculty, academic administrators, and student affairs educators can shape higher education’s response to calls for increased accountability while, at the same time, reinvigorating general education.
General education is often described in college publications and in faculty meetings as embodying core academic commitments, as an essential part of every student’s undergraduate education, and as an aid in developing our nation’s leaders, an engaged citizenry, and a productive workforce. In reality, higher education has struggled to live up to these core aspirations.
At the department level, teaching general education is often undervalued in the faculty reward structure, with chairs frequently seeing it as distracting from faculty members’ focus on students in the major. Students themselves habitually refer to general education as “courses to get out of the way,” and, although many clearly see connections between their success in the major and future careers, they rarely see the link between the goals of general education and long-term professional success. These realities and perceptions of general education can often result in faculty indifference and students who are confused about the purpose of general education.

This conference will explore the place and practice of science in college learning for the twenty-first century.
Conference sessions will feature practices that engage students with the power and centrality of science and with the global reach of science and technology in addressing the world’s urgent challenges. Participants will work on ways to accelerate hands-on learning in science, both in general education and in majors, especially reforms that put critical inquiry, undergraduate research, and social responsibility at the center of the educational experience. And they will work on ways to remove the many barriers—in campus culture and the reward systems—that still impede faculty efforts to teach "science as science is done."

Since the 1980s, the use of classroom response systems, or “clickers”, has proliferated on college campuses across the United States . Faculty members from numerous disciplines use clickers for various purposes, depending on the goals of the course and the learning needs of the students. Clickers are used widely to assess the level of students' knowledge, both before introducing new material and after it has been taught; to enhance active learning strategies such as peer instruction or think-pair-share activities; to enhance class discussion on difficult subjects where anonymity of opinion is helpful; to obtain attendance or participation information; to gather feedback on teaching; or assist in testing and evaluation of students (Zhu, 2007).
In the past 25 years, articles on the scholarship of teaching surrounding the use of clickers has increased dramatically. This conference will bring together scholars from across the United States to begin the process of using that literature and our collective experience in teaching with clickers to develop innovations and “best practice” models for the use of audience response systems in the classroom.
Objectives:
Compare and contrast innovations in classroom response systems that lead to better student engagement, foster greater critical thinking, provide effective assessment and evaluation, and offer other benefits for faculty and students.
Describe "best practices" in the use of classroom response systems.

8:00-4:15 p.m.; Reception to Follow
The Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology invites proposals for its 9th Annual University-wide Teaching & Learning Symposium, to be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at the Doubletree Conference Center in Bloomington. Although proposals on all topics related to teaching and learning are welcome, we especially encourage those that address the Symposium theme, "Teaching & Learning in a Diverse Community of Scholars," as follows:
Illinois State University enjoys a rich and proud heritage as an institution that welcomes diversity. As early as 1867, the University’s governing board wrote that "neither the board nor the faculty has any right to recognize distinctions of race or color in determining who shall or who shall not be admitted to the . . . University." Today the campus is home to students of many races, cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities
But the "diverse community of scholars" referenced in the University's mission statement (see Educating Illinois, 2008-2014) extends beyond differences of race, culture, ethnicity, and nationality. It includes scholars from a wide variety of disciplines, with different physical abilities, learning styles, and religious beliefs. It includes scholars of all ages and sexual orientations. It opens its doors to a range of political leanings and diverse opinions.
So what does it mean to teach and learn in a "diverse community of scholars"? How does being a member of this community shape our classroom practices, our research, our professional lives? How can we help our students learn to appreciate and thrive in such a community?

This year's conference, "The Technology Revolution in Higher Education: IT as a Catalyst for Change," will explore the impact of technology in our rapidly changing world. Technology has moved into the hands of information consumers who exercise their freedoms using cell phones, personal technology, social networking, and collaborative software. These technological advances are accelerating rapidly and, combined with technology's multidisciplinary nature, have a profound impact on requisite workforce skill sets. As we become increasingly global and interconnected, technology serves as a catalyst that stretches across disciplines, combining academic and social life. The threat of global pandemics. The instability of the world's resources. The question of privacy and security in a digital age.
Meeting these 21st-century challenges will test our political, environmental, and scientific ingenuity. It will require creative solutions and innovative new discoveries. And, as institutions, it will mean that the walls erected around our campuses, our disciplines, and our geographic borders will have less relevance in a world linked by the pursuit of common solutions. But what does it mean to effectively work together in the process of discovery or the pursuit of change? How do we teach cooperation and collaboration, while modeling the practice in our own offices and corridors? How do we break down the walls that divide our departments, our institutions, and our regions? And how can technologies facilitate the process?
Join us at the 2009 EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative Annual Meeting, Participation and Collaboration: Social Learning for the 21st Century, to explore processes and practices focused on social learning and student success.

AAC&U’s Annual Meetings provide opportunities for participants to examine the relationship between college learning and society. In recent years, we have collectively insisted that attention to the tradition, language, and practice of liberal education is critical if we hope to meet the many challenges of the world today. Our failure to fully engage our publics with the kinds of learning best suited to our current needs, persists even as the creative energies, widespread innovations, and intentional efforts of campuses across the nation are signaling resurgence in the vitality and relevance of liberal education.
Are we ready to exercise the leadership higher education and American society needs? Are our students ready to learn? How can we boost their readiness? Is society ready to make difficult choices about educational priorities? Are our institutions ready to face the societal and economic changes at hand?
Are we ready to fulfill America’s promise—or not?

The misson of the Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education is to promote networking among practitioners, research, ethical practices, reciprocal campus-community partnerships, sustainable programs, and a culture of engagement and public awareness through service-learning and other forms of civic engagement.
The 2009 Summit will bring together national speakers and more than 350 practitioners for dialogue and a forum for best practices.
The maturing of service-learning and civic engagement during the last quarter of the 20th century challenged us to rethink the concepts of "service" and "learning."
Service can no longer be taken for granted, complicated by questions of who serves and who is served. Learning has also been complicated by blurred lines between the learner and the teacher.
The 21st century challenges us to take seriously such possibilities as students as teachers, faculty as learners, and new models for community partners. Thus the questions multiply: Can we expand our stakeholder base to government and corporate partners? How can students take on teaching and leadership roles? What models help faculty to learn best? How can community partners share the role of instructor?
Join a variety of stakeholders at the 2009 Gulf-South Summit to explore the evolving roles of faculty, students, and community partners and the many ways service-learning and civic engagement and can be redefined to meet the needs of the 21st century.

With the support of the Teagle Foundation, and as part of its ongoing work in Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP), AAC & U has been engaged in a year-long planning process to develop a new summer institute for campus faculty and department chairs. The purpose of the institute is to support the development of leadership within and across departments for strengthening and assessing students’ liberal learning.
The Engaging Departments Institute will provide campus teams of academic administrators, department chairs, and faculty with an intensive, structured time to advance their plans to foster, assess, and improve student learning within departments and across the institution. Recognizing that most faculty identify strongly with their discipline and department, and students are engaged in more complex and sophisticated practice of liberal learning as they complete their majors, the institute builds from those academic "homes" toward effective educational leadership and intentional collaboration among departments to achieve program and institution-wide learning outcomes consistently and at high levels.
The Institute will concentrate on 1) leadership for learning within and among departments 2) assessments for achieving and improving essential outcomes, and 3) preparing for educational effectiveness by identifying and then replacing barriers with aligned effective practices.

In government, industry, and educational institutions the need to reduce costs, improve personnel performance, increase organizational efficiency, and enhance product or service quality is a critical management responsibility in an era of organizational downsizing and heightened competitive pressures. A way to address these issues is through the application of the latest technologies for education and training systems, job performance improvement systems, and knowledge management systems. These technologies offer great potential with the prospect of early implementation and organization-wide utilization. The Interactive Technologies Conference will be a premier venue for the presentation of the cutting edge of the state-of-the-art in these areas. This year the overall conference theme is Evidence-Based Learning and Teaching. This theme was chosen to reflect that approaches to teaching and learning should be based on scholarly activity. As disciplinary approaches use scholarly work to investigate and advance knowledge, pedagogical innovation should also advance by building on the work of others. The promise and potential to transform lives through online learning are enormous. All too often, though, the promises of certificates and degrees are never met. Students fail to reach their potential, struggling to complete their coursework at a distance or dropping out altogether. In order to improve online student retention, especially during these difficult economic times, institutions need methods to track students, document student progress, and put specific practices in place to ensure student success.
Join us for the Retaining Students in Online Education conference as we discuss some practical strategies for online student retention. You will be engaged in small and large group discussions, brainstorming, and planning as you develop an action plan specific to the needs of your institution.

Educating for Personal and Social Responsibility: Deepening Student and Campus Commitments will bring together faculty, student affairs personnel, academic administrators, students, and others to explore how to move education for personal and social responsibility to the center of institutional culture and academic practice. The program will feature promising practices that develop students’ civic engagement and social responsibility in both a local and global context; personal and academic integrity; ability to examine and understand differing (and often competing) perspectives; and ethical and moral reasoning.
The central premise of the conference is that personal integrity and ethics cannot be developed in isolation from a commitment to and engagement with others, and that students’ ethical, civic, and moral development must be addressed as part of their basic responsibilities as learners. At a time when our nation faces ethical and civic challenges of daunting complexity, it is crucial that we return to the core commitments of personal and social responsibility inherent in liberal education.

Like the rest of the nation, higher education is feeling the impact of a severe economic downturn. Now more than ever, educators have to prove the viability of first-year programs and initiatives by using assessment data. The Institute on First-Year Assessment is designed to provide faculty, first-year program directors, student affairs professionals, institutional researchers, and/or assessment practitioners who are new to the field of first-year assessment with the tools to respond to these demands.
Exploring both quantitative and qualitative assessment practices, the Institute's purpose is to provide a comprehensive introduction to first-year assessment. Workshops allow an in-depth examination of major issues facing higher educators, particularly those working with first-year students, and are structured to create a cumulative learning experience. Participants will have access to faculty throughout the Institute during informal work sessions, maximizing opportunities for learning and networking. As a working Institute, participants will leave with a draft of an assessment plan geared toward their particular campus context.
Higher educators who have recently become charged with the responsibility of assessing first-year programs and initiatives will find the Institute to be an invaluable learning opportunity.

Developing students' ability to integrate and apply learning is an important piece of what makes college education relevant for today’s world. On any given day, newspaper headlines point to the need for graduates who are sophisticated in their thinking, able to discern complexity in situations, and motivated to continuously seek better, more responsible, solutions to problems encountered in work, in life, and in society. Today's world demands graduates who can contribute depth of knowledge and also use a variety of sources to seek new insights. The current context also requires graduates who are creative; who can anticipate the not-yet-known, and negotiate rapid technological, cultural, and global shifts.
Yet most students enter college unaccustomed to addressing the complexities inherent in disciplinary and cross-disciplinary learning, in applying their knowledge to novel circumstances, or in engaging diverse perspectives, either in day-to-day campus life or in broader social, political, and economic contexts. What can faculty, student affairs educators, and administrators do to build more authentic learning experiences that will help students develop integrative capacities over time?

The Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology invites proposals for its Annual University-wide Teaching & Learning Symposium, to be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the new Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, adjacent to the Illinois State University campus in uptown Normal. Although proposals on all topics related to teaching and learning are welcome, we especially encourage those that address the Symposium theme, "Sustainable Teaching, Sustainable Learning, Sustainable Living" as follows:
When we hear the word "sustainability" today, we often think of the efforts we make to manage our interactions with the natural world in order to sustain our environment. But in its broadest sense, "sustainability" has been defined as "the capacity to endure." And it is in that sense that it gains additional meaning for us as teachers and scholars. For if teaching and learning are have true value, they must endure.
So what does it mean to teach, learn, and live sustainably? How do we, as faculty members, sustain a passion for teaching, for research and for service over the course of a career—or even over the course of a particularly arduous semester? How do we ensure that what the learning that takes place in our classrooms will endure beyond the final exam date, sustaining our students even after they leave the university? And finally, how can we use our classrooms to promote sustainable living and prepare students to live in sustainable ways?

Join us at the 2010 EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative Annual Meeting, "Learning Environments for a Web 2.0 World," where we'll explore models for the future of learning that fuse emerging technologies and learner-centered strategies to yield new learning environments designed for student success.
Today's technologies have fundamentally altered the very lenses we use to examine the world around us. Smartphones, PDAs, and MP3 players have granted instant access to information irrespective of location, creating ubiquitous, mobile access to entertainment and information. The rise of social networks and virtual communities like Flickr, YouTube, and Ustream has transformed the web from a place to seek information into a gateway to share, build, and interact with content and communities. High-performance networks and collaborative tools like wikis and videoconferencing also allow us to reach across hallways and beyond oceans to share interests, work with colleagues, and seek advice from peers.
But how have these new tools and our emergent participatory culture changed the way we imagine learning environments on campus? Or, perhaps the more pertinent question is, How should our perspectives be changing? And how can we begin to move past an educational model that is tethered to time and place and move closer to learning that is immersive, mobile, collaborative, and social?

Today's economic uncertainties challenge all of us to be creative in meeting our commitments to students. These uncertainties also make even more urgent the need for us to prepare all students to thrive in a turbulent and fluid world.
Now, more than ever, AAC&U members are championing the value of a liberal education for individual students as well as for a nation dependent on economic creativity and democratic vitality. Colleges, universities, state systems and other partners are engaging the public and the academy with core questions about what really matters in college, using new clarity about essential learning outcomes to organize their efforts to pursue educational excellence, assess learning, and align school with college and goals with practices.
Efforts to sustain creative innovation and address the future of liberal learning in a context of dramatic change are evident within all sectors of the higher education community. We invite you to share your best efforts to translate educational vision into concrete practices.
Together, Annual Meeting participants will frankly assess the progress we have made and define the challenges that remain as we imagine—and shape—our possible futures.

Colleges and universities are making tough decisions about budget cuts, hiring freezes, and reduction or elimination of programs. General education and assessment initiatives, in particular, can be vulnerable to cuts or to inattention as college and university leaders work to preserve enrollments, meet shortfalls, and maintain basic operations. Yet issues that existed long before the current economic crisis remain—fragmentation and incoherence, a lack of "ownership" of general education among many faculty members, and a desire among students to "get it out of the way." What also remains is the need, through general education, to prepare all graduates with essential knowledge and skills, including global knowledge, scientific and quantitative literacy, intercultural skills, and ethical competencies.
The good news is that out of earlier periods of challenge and change, campus leaders have coalesced around more contemporary goals for student learning and new and creative curricula and pedagogy. They have also embarked upon meaningful assessment that was keyed to these new designs and utilized to strengthen learning.
General Education and Assessment: Maintaining Momentum, Achieving New Priorities invites fresh thinking and new approaches to help faculty, staff, and administrators maintain momentum in general education and assessment during tough times, and reaffirms a commitment to engaged liberal education as the guiding principle for campus action. The conference will draw on AAC&U's long-standing projects and publications on general education reform including work to bring diversity, global, and civic learning into general education and models for advancing scientific and quantitative literacy through real-world curricula and problem-based pedagogies.

As the first decade of the 21st century comes to a close, pressing social and economic challenges have brought renewed attention to the importance of volunteerism and service in civic life. In these critical times, a national call for service is engaging citizens of all ages in creating innovative solutions for recovery. This dialogue brings new focus on the potential of service-learning and civic engagement to address local and global problems and to engage students, faculty, and community partners in civic renewal. Along with the growing needs in our communities, colleges and universities are also facing the challenge of building and sustaining engagement initiatives with limited resources. This conflict between crisis and opportunity raises many questions: As engagement comes of age, what role will people, place, and partners play in creating models for service-learning and civic engagement? How will we maintain quality as demand for service opportunities increases and resources tighten? How will place be understood as students and faculty engage in service-learning in both local and global contexts?
Join colleagues at the 2010 Gulf-South Summit March 3-5, 2010 at the University of Georgia as we examine these questions critically and explore how people, place, and partners are building and sustaining engagement in critical times.
The mission of the Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education is to promote networking among practitioners, research, ethical practices, reciprocal campus-community partnerships, sustainable programs, and a culture of engagement and public awareness through service-learning and other forms of civic engagement.

Lilly Conference for College and University Teaching – East is a national teaching and learning conference that has received consistently high evaluations and praise for both the strength of the presenters and the community feel that is realized each year during meals, in sessions, and at receptions. This year the conference is changing the and moving from Newark, Delaware, to College Park, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC. The conference hotel is just 22 miles from the Baltimore-Washington Airport and has easy access to the DC Metro system. The timing of the conference has also changed from April to the first week in June. This was done to allow faculty to finish spring courses and have an opportunity to come to the conference to reflect on what was done well, and what adjustments might be made for the fall semester.
Also new this year are the subthemes, identified to reflect the newest challenges and accomplishments with respect to student learning. Within the major conference theme of Evidence-Based Teaching and Learning, there are again four major subthemes to focus our discussions: Advancing Active Learning; Teaching Responsibly with Technology; Preparing Future Faculty; Creating Communities of Learners.
Advancing Active Learning:
This track will focus on ways to promote learning in which students are actively involved with the course material; practicing the scholarship of teaching and learning through a pedagogy of interaction. Examples include (but are not limited to) problem-based learning, group projects, interactive discussions, demonstrations, and inclusive teaching methods
Teaching Responsibly with Technology:
Learning must drive technology advancement. This track will identify ways in which the integration of a wide variety of technologies promotes student learning. Technologies presented will include (but are not limited to) best practices to include course management tools, student response systems, online collaboration tools, blogs, and chats.
Preparing Future Faculty:
The PFF track is designed to assist future faculty in preparing for their careers as college and university instructors. It is also designed to assist those developing PFF programs. Sessions in this area will include (but are not limited to) understanding the principles of course design, developing teaching portfolios, establishing a research agenda, work-life balance, and identifying resources needed to success as in the first teaching position.
Creating Communities of Learners:
The affective domain and social support are often ignored in discussions of learning, but how students interact and support one another is an important aspect to learning. Sessions in this area will focus on learning communities, respect in the classroom, classroom civility and incivility, building support systems, and the impact of the affective domain on learning.
In addition to these themes, there will be two preconference workshops Wednesday, June 2, 2010, with one focusing on Preparing Future Faculty and the other focusing on Teaching Tips for Experienced Faculty.

The Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching – Traverse City brought together faculty from a variety of disciplines and at various stages of their academic careers to share new advances in teaching and learning.
