January 5, 2011
8:00-4:15 p.m.; Reception to Follow
The Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology invites proposals for its annual, university-wide Teaching & Learning Symposium, to be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2011. Although proposals on all topics related to teaching and learning are welcome, we especially encourage those that address the 2011 Symposium theme, “State Your Passion for Teaching and Learning,” as follows:
When students participating in a panel presentation at New Faculty Orientation this fall were asked, “What can professors do to motivate student learning?” they were quick to respond, “Be passionate—excited about the subject matter.” The need for passionate instruction is echoed in the literature on teacher effectiveness, where passion has been identified as “a quality of good teachers” (Arnold and Hughes); a defense against anesthetizing approaches to instruction (Kozol); a factor in increased work satisfaction, decreased burnout, and an increase in “teacher-perceived adaptive student behaviors” (Carbonneau, Vallerand, Fernet, and Guay); the result of commitment, enthusiasm, and energy (Day); “the attribute I value most in a… new faculty member” (Llewellyn); and “Number One” of “The Top Ten Requirements” for good teaching (Leblanc).
What role does passion play in our teaching? In our research? In our service? What strategies can we, as instructors, use to infuse passion into our teaching? How can we sustain that passion? How can we communicate it? What role does passion play in student learning? How can we instill our students with a passion for learning? Is this possible? Is it even “our job” to do so? How can we instill our students with a passion for our discipline? Is it possible to infuse a sense of passion into the cultures of entire programs, departments, or other units? What, if any, resources are needed to invoke and communicate passionate work? What might be the consequences of either succeeding in or failing to instill a sense of passion into teaching and learning at our University?

Pressed by competitive notions of "world class" education, by the imperatives of changing international economic and political power, and by student demands that their education include opportunities to creatively tackle real-world challenges, colleges and universities are striving to become more global. Their efforts are made both more difficult and more urgent because they are taking place in the context of unsettling economic instability, in the midst of profound demographic change, and in the face of wavering political commitment to broad learning. What characterizes a global college or university?

Come join us as John Gardner, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Oregon State University and founder and president of ViewPlus Technologies, Inc, presents a program on print accessibility. After losing his sight in 1988 in mid-career, Gardner found there were very few tools available for blind people to convert visually-oriented information, like diagrams and structured mathematics, to a medium that could be fully comprehended through touch and sound. This led to his development of new technologies for access to complex information by people with print disabilities.

Join us at the 2011 EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative Annual Meeting, "Educating in the Open: Philosophies, Innovations, and Stories," where we as a community will explore the theme of openness, face-to-face February 14–16, in Washington D.C.; or, if you can't attend in person join us online.
We'll explore the many meanings of "openness": open textbooks, open curriculum, open research, and open resources, as well as openness to new ideas. Today's technologies have transformed the way we interact and engage with the world around us. New devices, services, and effective practices have increased access to information while new policies and philosophies that explore openness have accelerated that change. The growth of social networks and virtual communities has transformed the learning environment into an interactive place to share and build content and community using collaborative systems.

Is the world turning faster these days or does it just seem like it? Alvin Toffler's predictions for "future shock" or too much change in too short a time now seem very close to reality. Although we experience stress in our social spaces as this change momentum increases, many of us will continue to find solutions to some of the seemingly intractable problems facing our communities. A focus on civic engagement, community partnerships, and service learning are all vital ingredients to meeting changes successfully. Service to others has never been more necessary than in 2011.

The Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching – D.C. brings together faculty from a variety of disciplines and at various stages of their academic careers. Past participants have been comprised of K-12 educators, graduate students, and higher education faculty and administrators. All participants come to learn about new advances in teaching and learning. The presenters are selected through a blind review process of all proposals, with the purpose of sharing scholarly work to improve teaching and learning.
Lilly Conferences on College and University Teaching and Learning anchor the annual conference on the overarching theme "Evidence-Based Learning and Teaching". This theme reflects the philosophy that our approaches to teaching and learning should be based on scholarly activity. As disciplinary approaches use scholarly work to investigate and advance knowledge, pedagogical innovation should also advance by building on the work of others.

This conference will introduce innovative approaches to teaching and learning, challenge previously held assumptions regarding acquisition of knowledge, and share new ways to help students learn from both their instructors and from one another. Grounded in the fields of neuroscience, cognitive psychology, physiology, pedagogy and andragogy, brain-based learning is the application of our collective and integrated knowledge about how the brain works to learn foundational concepts and to solve meaningful problems. Drawing from our combined practice and scholarship, together we can create more meaningful learning environments for our students.
In addition to the overall theme of "Brain-Based Learning and Teaching," we include additional sub-themes that address some of the most important aspects of learning and teaching. At Lilly -T.C. we offer the following sub-themes: Engaged Learning; Promoting Social Responsibility; E-Learning; and Creating Communities of Learners, and Preparing Future Faculty.
