Heartland Community College offers students the chance to expand their horizons by immersing themselves in another culture through a variety of study abroad programs. Studying abroad requires advanced planning.

May 27-June 28, 2008


  • Seven hours of credit from Heartland Community College
    • Spanish language available at 6 levels (no prior knowledge required)
    • Civilization and Culture of Costa Rica (HUMA 213)
  • Spanish instruction for 20 hours per week in small classes of approximately 2-8 students
  • Dancing and other classes available
  • Participants are required to attend an Intensive Weekend with preparation tips, language testing, and opportunity to meet one another

Field Trips

  • Arenal Volcano and hot springs
  • Manuel Antonio National Park
  • La Paz Waterfall Gardens
  • Banana and coffee plantations


  • Homestay in San José
  • Breakfast and dinner included


  • 2.75 GPA
  • Minimum age: 18
  • A or B in English 101
  • 12-15 hours of earned credit

$2,849 + approximately $1,000 in personal expenses (lunches, phone, souvenirs and miscellaneous expenses) includes:

Payment Schedule

Three payments due the 1st of March, April, and May

Students are strongly advised to plan early for a study abroad experience. Both financial and academic arrangements take time. Dates, cost information, and applications are available through Pamela Sweetwood, Study Abroad Office (CCB 2308).
