Who participates in Study Abroad?

The programs are available to participating Illinois community college students. Some programs are organized by other Illinois community colleges so the majority of the participants may be from that institution.

How do I begin?

  1. Meet minimum requirements. Generally, the requirements include:
    • 2.75 grade point average
    • Minimum age: 18
    • An A or B in English 101
    • 12-15 hours of earned credit with deposit
    • Study abroad application
    • Two letters of recommendation
  2. Arrange financing and classes. Financing is an important factor in deciding to study abroad.
  3. Decide when and where you would like to go. Each study abroad program has its own application, deadline, and requirements.
  4. Complete the application and pay the deposit. Applications are available through Heartland's International Office (CCB 2308) and should only be completed when plans are finalized.
  5. Schedule an interview with International Program staff.
  6. Begin making arrangements. There will be many details to arrange before the trip: applying for a passport, attending orientation, arranging insurance, etc. Students receive additional information once accepted into the program.
