HCC Student Earns Zonta Club of Lincoln Award
From the Zonta Club of Lincoln:
Current Heartland Community College student Burgandy D. Henderson was recently named the recipient of the 2012 Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award by the Zonta Club of Lincoln, IL.
The goal of the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Program is to encourage more young women to participate in public affairs to become the leaders of tomorrow. Annually, the program recognizes a 16 to 19 year-old woman's commitment to the volunteer sector through leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.
This year, applicants were asked to reflect on their voluntary commitment to their school and their community and the problems limiting the advancement of the status of women in their own country and worldwide.
According to the press release, the Zonta Club of Lincoln named Henderson as its 2012 Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award recipient due to her high academic standing, community leadership and diverse volunteer activities. Henderson intends to pursue a degree in speech pathology, and believes women should not be afraid to let their voices be heard and to take measures to equalize gender representation in Congress.
Zonta Club of Lincoln funds the scholarship program with the help of Lincoln & Logan County through the sale of tickets to our annual Turkey Dinner.
Zonta International, with world headquarters in Oak Brook, IL, is a worldwide service organization made up of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women.
