HCC Student-Athletes Earn National Recognition

The Heartland Community College Athletic Department is proud to announce the performance of their student-athletes both in the classroom and on the field. The Hawks had six student-athletes earn NJCAA academic honors and three student-athletes named NJCAA All-Americans.

Softball player Kathryn Brown (Tri-Valley HS; Bloomington) earned the highest academic award -- the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence -- for sustaining a 4.0 GPA. Baseball had three student-athletes named -- Mitch Tielke (Grayslake Central HS; Grayslake), for Superior Academic Achievement with a 3.8 GPA; Michael Collins (Normal West HS; Normal) for Exemplary Academic Achievement with a 3.77 GPA; and Mike Wieland (Rock Island HS; Rock Island) for Exemplary Academic Achievement with a 3.77 GPA.  Sami Dees (Williamsville HS; Williamsville),  earned an Exemplary Academic Achievement recognition with a 3.76 GPA in the women's soccer division, while Ricky Wright (Normal West HS; Normal), earned the same nod with a 3.66 GPA in men's soccer.

In addition to the individual awards, softball also earned a 2012 All-Academic Team award for their overall team GPA of 3.13.

The Hawks produced three All-Americans -- Dylan Johnson (Bloomington HS; Bloomington), NJCAA Baseball D-II All-American (First Team); Danielle Burge (Tremont HS; Tremont), NJCAA Softball D-II All-American (First Team), and Aaron Hauge (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Homewood), NJCAA Baseball D-II All-American (Third Team).
