Life and health insurance courses are intended to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the life and health insurance and financial services industries and to prepare for Life Office Management Association (LOMA) examinations and designations. All insurance courses (designated by the INSR prefix in the catalog) are offered through LOMA with the remainder of courses in the program offered at HCC.
Employment opportunities in the field of insurance are wide and varying and include insurance appraisal, claims adjusting, and sales agents.
In 2006 in the State of Illinois, median annual wage and salary earnings of insurance appraisers, claims adjustors, and agents ranged from $45,920-$51,477.1
A Certificate in Life and Health Insurance Basics can be earned by completing 20 credit hours through LOMA and HCC. Students in the program will learn about insurance principles and products, insurance company operations, legal aspects of life and health insurance, marketing life and health insurance, and customer service concepts and strategies. The Basics certificate prepares students for five LOMA examinations, which, collectively, lead to the professional designation of Associate, Customer Service (ACS) granted by LOMA.
A Certificate in Life and Health Insurance Expanded can be earned by completing 36 credit hours through LOMA and HCC. Students in the program will develop a foundation of knowledge of life/health insurance administration, information systems, economics and investment, accounting, finance, and management. The Expanded certificate prepares students for 10 LOMA examinations, which, collectively, lead to the professional designation of Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) granted by LOMA.
The Associates in Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) in Life and Health Insurance can be earned in by completing 61 credit hours through LOMA and HCC and provides students with a solid understanding of the life/health insurance industry as well as general education courses that will transfer to any four-year Illinois institution participating in the Illinois Articulation Initiative.
