Online & Hybrid Classes
The College may offer several different modes of instruction to better accommodate your access to educational opportunities and your academic success.
These course delivery options listed below have the same workload (homework, quizzes, assignments, tests, deadlines, etc.) as in-person classes and our faculty have been trained in these modalities. Our learning management system (Canvas) is used to provide a range of information and content depending on the instructor and/or delivery method.
To be successful in courses with an online component, you need to be:
- highly organized
- good at managing your time
- self-motivated and able to work on your own
- a strong reader and writer
Canvas coursework can be completed via a computer or mobile device, however we do recommend using a computer for any exams or quizzes your instructor may require.
Fully Online Courses
You can choose the time of day to work on the course to complete assignments by due dates and times. All coursework will be completed online using Canvas. Faculty interact with students through assignments, discussion posts, email, and office hours.
Online Courses with Additional Requirements
These online courses have additional requirements that can include: exams must be completed in an in-person, proctored testing environment; or speeches must be performed in front of a live, self-generated audience (see COMM 101 Course Guide for additional information regarding online speech classes). All other coursework will be completed online using Canvas. Classes in this modality have a course note on the schedule indicating this requirement.
Hybrid Courses (HY)
These courses combine in-person and online learning in a hybrid class. The in-person elements will have specified days, times, locations, campus locations, and attendance is expected. All other coursework will be completed online using Canvas to complement the in-person elements.
Open Learning Courses (OL)
You can choose to complete lab hours, and meet with a facilitator, either by an appointment in the Business Technology Learning Center, or to participate virtually through Zoom. The content for this course will be completed using Canvas.
Your computer must:
- Run the most recent version of Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome (Internet Explorer and Safari do not work well for online/hybrid courses at HCC)
- Be able to view real-time video
- Have a dependable Internet connection (signal loss may result in incomplete work submission). DSL and wireless connections are not always reliable.
