Heartland offers students several ways to enhance their learning through Tutoring Services.
All students have access to Heartland’s tutoring program, which enables students to meet one-on-one with engaging and attentive tutors free of charge. Tutoring is available in a wide variety of subjects as well as general study skills.
Students can meet with either Peer Tutors or Master Tutors. Peer Tutors are students who have earned at least 15 credit hours and maintain a 3.0 GPA. Master Tutors are tutors who have earned at least a bachelor's degree. All Tutors at Heartland go through extensive training before they meet with students, and the tutoring program at HCC has received the highest level of certification by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
Students can drop in for Tutoring at various times throughout the week. A variety of tutors are on hand for general assistance. To ensure a tutor with your specific needs is on hand, take advantage of appointment tutoring or set up a group tutoring session.
Note: Students who wish to develop their overall writing style also can contact Writing Services and work with members of Heartland's English faculty
Tutors are available for a limited number of hours each week in Pontiac and Lincoln on a drop-in basis. Call ahead for the tutor schedule before you arrive at the location.
Efforts are made to schedule tutors around the class times of the courses highest in demand for tutoring, often math and English. Three or more students from the same class may also set up a study group.
Students with a desire to teach and help others or community members with an interest in mentoring students are encouraged to apply for a tutoring position with Heartland Community College. Those who go through tutoring training courses can qualify to be certified as master tutors.
