Why Electric Vehicle Technology?

The Electric Vehicle Technology program is designed to prepare students to meet the demands of the emerging field of manufacturing, diagnosistics, service, and repair of electric powered vehicles. The AAS and Certificates are designed to prepare individuals with the skills and competencies necessary for a variety of successful career options in assembly, maintenance and light repair, service advising, and as electric vehicle technicians through adoption of the habits and attitude necessary to excel in a highly competitive environment. The energy storage component of the program can be transferred from vehicles to post-vehicle battery second-life applications in stationary residential, commercial, and utility-scale energy storage systems.

The AAS is designed for both traditional and nontraditional students with minimal prior traditional automotive and/or electric vehicle experience. This pathway also gives students the ability to transfer to 4 year Universities with a 2+2 Articulation Agreement from either Weber State University(Online/In-Person) and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Students completing the Electric Vehicle Technology AAS will earn four stackable certificates aligned to in-demand occupations and industry certifications.

Special Program Information

The EV program is housed in our new State Farm Electric Vehicle Lab.

An Associate of Applied Science is designed to give you practical, hands-on instruction in to prepare you to directly enter the workforce in a specific field. These programs are not generally transferable for a Bachelor's degree.

This program offers students the ability to transfer to SIUC or Weber State University for a 4 year Bachelor Degree in Automotive Technology along with Bachelor in Automotive and Vehicle Engineering Technology.  Pursuing these opportunities gives students the opportunity to better place themselves in leadership roles in the automotive industry including Management, Education, Field Test Engineering, Quality Control Specialist.

The transfer agreement with Weber State for a Bachelors of Automotive Technology can be done online or in-person. And transfer agreement with SIUC for a Bachelor of Science in Automotive Technology or you can get a Bachelor of Science in Technical Resource Management. See an advisor for more details.

Electric Vehicle Technology Certificate

The Electric Vehicle Technology Certificate is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment or upskill opportunities in the field of manufacturing, diagnosis, service, and repair of electric powered vehicles through intensive training on electric vehicle systems and components. The Electric Vehicle Technology Certificate will be earned by individuals completing the EV Technology AAS program and can be completed as an upskill opportunity for those with traditional automotive industry-recognized credentials and/or an existing AAS in Automotive Technology for specialization as an Electric Vehicle Technician. This also works for students that have completed dual credit opportunities at the Bloomington Career Academy or with Industry work experience such as a current technician in an entry level position. This Certificate is heavy on Electrical theory, diagnostics and repairs for both AC and DC electrical systems which is a great fit for any automotive technician.

Special Program Information

This is a great fit for any student that went to a High School that did Dual Credit with HCC for Automotive Technology or took Level 100 automotive courses at other colleges or trade schools. This is also for individuals that have traditional automotive industry recognized credentials such as ASE Certifications.  This is stackable into our AAS Electric Vehicle Technology Associate program which can be completed at a later date. Students that may not be great at doing general education classes, this would make a great fit to further education in technical classes.  Transcripts and/or credentials must be provided to enroll in 200 level courses.

Electrical Vehicle Service Advisor Certificate

The Electric Vehicle Service Advisor Certificate prepares individuals with skills for entry-level employment or upskill opportunities as a service advisor, acting as an intermediary between customers and technicians to determine vehicle issues, provide technicians with accurate repair descriptions, and ensure a superior customer service experience. This is great for an individual who is seeking to not become a service technician, but still work heavily in the automotive industry. The certificate combines basic technical automotive skills with appropriate computer and customer service skills to prepare students to work as service advisors or vehicle technicians. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to diagnose standard automobile mechanical problems while working effectively with the public. Students completing this certificate can continue their coursework onto the Electric Vehicle Technology Certificate and/or Electric Vehicle Technology AAS program for further education and career opportunities.

Electrical Vehicle Maintenance & Light Repair Certificate

The  Electric Vehicle Maintenance and Light Repair Certificate prepares individuals with skills for entry-level employment in basic vehicle maintenance and repair. The certificate combines basic automotive skills with appropriate computer and customer service skills for employment as a light duty mechanic or line technician. Students completing this certificate can continue their coursework onto the Service Advisor Certificate and/or Electric Vehicle Technology AAS program for further education and career opportunities. This is a great opportunity for an individual that may be going into an OEM Service program afterwards like Tesla START or Rivian Technical Trades.

The courses included in this certificate can be applied toward the Electric Vehicle Service Advisor Certificate and the Associate in Applied Science - Electric Vehicle Technology.

Electrical Vehicle Energy Storage Certificate

The Electric Vehicle Energy Storage Microcertificate provides a focused understanding of electric vehicle energy storage systems and high-voltage safety principles. The microcertificate is designed to prepare students for the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) L3 Hybrid and Electric Vehicle exam and to strengthen overall knowledge in electric vehicle technology. This microcertificate is well suited for experienced technicians or individuals who have completed prior automotive training and wish to expand their knowledge by pursuing certification related to electric vehicles. The courses included in this microcertificate can be applied toward the Associate in Applied Science in Electric Vehicle Technology.
