Why Math?
Mathematics is more than numbers—it’s a way of thinking that builds problem-solving skills, logical reasoning, and confidence in tackling challenges. Studying math opens doors to careers in business, technology, healthcare, and beyond, while strengthening critical skills employers value in every field. Whether you’re preparing for transfer, advancing your career, or simply improving everyday skills, math provides the foundation for success.
Departmental Mission Statement
Using creative course design and interventions, we seek to empower HCC students to attain the level of math proficiency they need to achieve their educational goals by:
- Preparing students to pursue coursework or degrees in mathematics, statistics, math education, and related disciplines upon transfer to a four-year institution.
- Engaging students in critical thinking and problem solving.
- Creating a supportive, equitable environment for learning that fosters appreciation of mathematics.
- Applying technology in pedagogically sound ways to enhance students' learning experiences.
- Providing diverse learning experiences and offering multiple avenues of learning. While taking a mathematics course, a student may be asked to do group work, complete writing assignments, participate in discovery and investigatory exercises, complete take-home activities, or give presentations.
We serve students by offering:
- Traditional university/college-level courses in mathematics. These courses are equivalent to freshman and sophomore-level university courses and are designed to improve employment status or career options or to prepare students for further study in mathematics or fields requiring mathematics.
- Developmental and co-requisite mathematics courses for students who require additional support before taking the courses required to meet their personal goals.
