Why Phlebotomy? 

Phlebotomists play a vital role in healthcare by acquiring a quality specimen for physicians to diagnose, medicate, and treat their patients. In this 16-week course, you will learn basic phlebotomy skills. Enhance your professionalism, bedside manner, and how you relate this medical procedure to your patient. After successful completion of this class, you’ll gain Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) credentials through the National Healthcareer Association®.

Course Highlights

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for phlebotomists is expected to grow 23% from 2016-2026, faster than the average for all occupations.  By the year 2024, projected regional jobs are to be approximately 600.

Course Option

Prerequisites:

Completion of MATH 087 and ENGL 099 is recommended.
Enrolled students need to be at least 18 years of age and have obtained a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Phlebotomy coursework:

MA 155
- This comprehensive course is designed to equip students with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required for a successful career as a phlebotomist. Through hands-on training and classroom instruction, students will learn critical techniques for blood collection, patient care, and lab safety. Students will learn about different types of blood collection methods, including venipuncture and capillary puncture, as well as the use of various equipment such as needles, syringes, and blood collection tubes. The course also addresses specimen handling, processing, and the importance of accurate labeling to ensure the integrity of test results. Students will receive instruction and be required to demonstrate successful completion of 30 venipunctures on living individuals, and 10 successful capillary punctures, and demonstrate competence performing other basic laboratory skills. Additionally, this course will cover necessary safety procedures to keep the healthcare environment safe for patients and providers, as well as the communication skills necessary to provide clear and transparent care to diverse patients.
- Career and Technical Course: This course is a specific requirement for an Associate of Applied Science or certificate program and may not transfer. Please consult with your advisor about transferability.
