Joe McCauley Gallery presents In Between the Cracks
October 19, 2022A exhibit of sculpture at Heartland Community College offers a window into how nature finds a way into man-made landscapes.
Heartland’s Joe McCauley Gallery presents the collection In Between the Cracks created by local artist Laura Primozic George. The exhibit runs from October 17 to December 9, 2022.
The exhibit presents visitors with the opportunity to step back from the larger conversation surrounding the human impact on the environment to recognize a persistent and ever-present part of nature: moss.
“Laura’s work takes a closer look at environmental issues and introduces an interesting point of view on the matter. She focuses on the parts that survive and thrive without human help, and despite our interaction,” said Gallery coordinator Shahrbanoo Hamzeh. “The way she puts cold, bold concrete next to the soft green moss evokes the idea of humanmade technology verses nature.”
Primozic George, an Instructional Technician in the Wonsook Kim School of Arts at Illinois State University, has work displayed in permanent collections at the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, MN; the Racine Art Museum in Racine, WI; and the Saratoga Clay Center in Schuylerville, NY.
“This work takes me away from my previous research into the impacts of melting glaciers and icebergs and allows me a moment to stop and look at a landscape that is closer and within reach,” said Primozic George. “I am looking at my feet, at the cracks in between where I walk, catching glimpses of this tiny part of nature which inevitably finds its way back into our man-made landscapes. Moss is overlooked, stepped over, stepped on, or scraped aside. Yet, it thrives without human help, care, or interest. It's in between the cracks that we can look for how moss and nature will survive without us.”
The In Between The Cracks exhibit is free and open to the public on weekdays during regular Gallery hours. A reception for the exhibits is planned for November 2 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Joe McCauley Gallery.
