Joe McCauley Gallery presents 'Albatross'

August 29, 2023

A new exhibition at Heartland Community College’s Joe McCauley Gallery explores the impact of waste and pollution on the environment using the ancient craft of basketry paired with x-ray images.

The exhibition Albatross, featuring the creations of artist Ann B. Coddington, runs now through October 3rd, 2023, at the Gallery, located on the campus of Heartland Community College in Normal.

Albatross delves into the interplay between humanity and the natural world, with a particular focus on the critical issue of plastic pollution. Coddington's artworks serve as poignant reminders, urging viewers to contemplate their role within the global ecosystem and their responsibility in shaping the environment's future.

Coddington earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois Sculpture Department and her Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Colorado State University Fibers Department. Currently serving as a Professor of Art and Graduate Coordinator at Eastern Illinois University, she brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her craft. Additionally, Coddington actively contributes to the art community as co-chair of Exhibitions and a board member of the National Basketry Organization.

Reflecting on her creative process, Coddington says, "In my work, I tie string together and interweave fibers to create a sculptural expression of embodied experiences. I am exploring the dichotomies: eternal and ephemeral, strong and delicate, masculine and feminine, old and young, living and dead.”

The Gallery will host a closing reception on October 3, featuring an artist talk at 3:30 p.m. and an open reception from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., both open to the public.
