Heartland professor Shabani honored by Royal Conservatory

September 18, 2023

A Heartland Community College music professor has been honored by the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Dr. Afrim Shabani, Heartland Associate Adjunct Professor in Humanities and Fine Arts, has been recognized as a Teacher of Distinction by The Royal Conservatory of Music. Out of a nationwide pool of thousands of dedicated music educators, only six exceptional teachers were selected for this prestigious recognition this year.

The Royal Conservatory's Teacher of Distinction Awards celebrate educators across North America who exhibit exceptional dedication, innovation, and impact in music education. The recognition reflects not only Shabani's extraordinary commitment to HCC students but also a passion for advancing the field of music education.

Dr. Shabani has drawn praise from his peers and students alike for consistently demonstrating a deep understanding of the importance of music education in the lives of his students. With the award, Shabani is recognized for his teaching methodologies, commitment to student success, and ability to inspire and nurture young musical talents.

“The path to this moment was paved by the nominations of my own students, a fact that makes this honor even more meaningful,” said Shabani. “Their testimonies and acknowledgment of our shared musical journey are a true testament to the bonds we've built and the impact of our time together.”

Courses that Dr. Shabani teaches at Heartland include Piano, Music Appreciation, and Jazz, Blues, and Rock & Roll.

The Royal Conservatory of Music is one of the largest and most respected music education institutions in the world, providing a standard of excellence in curriculum design, assessment, performance training, teacher certification, and arts-based social programs.

Dr. Shabani will be honored at the regional Celebration of Excellence event this fall.
