Veterans honored and Marine Corps Anniversary celebrated Nov. 10
October 14, 2025Heartland Community College will honor veterans, current members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and recognize the 250th Anniversary of the Marine Corps on Monday, November 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the atrium of the Workforce Development Center (WDC) on the Main Campus (1500 W. Raab Rd., Normal).
The Veterans’ celebration is a community-wide event, bringing together students, faculty, staff, and residents in appreciation for all who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
The program will feature a keynote address titled “Legacy of Service and Honor for all Veterans,” delivered by Retired Major General John L. Borling. General Borling is a distinguished Vietnam Veteran with a military career that includes service as Chief of Staff at Headquarters Allied Forces North Europe in Stavanger, Norway, and was also stationed at NATO's Supreme Headquarters in Belgium, where he worked directly under the Supreme Allied Commander and Chief of Staff. He also spent 6-1/2 years as a prisoner of war in Hanoi.
The event will also feature remarks from Heartland Community College President Keith Cornille.
After the presentation, Veterans and Military-Connected students are invited to the Penn Family Student Veterans Center in WDC 1005.
The Penn Family Veterans Center was established in 2024. The purpose of the center is to establish a space on campus for soldiers to transition to students in a welcoming environment specifically geared toward those who simply need support in pursuing their education. The Center already serves over 150 Armed Forces veterans and active service members who attend Heartland Community College.
