Heartland Adult Education student named Illinois GED Grad of the Year
August 11, 2025A Heartland Community College Adult Education graduate has been recognized for overcoming adversity on a path to academic achievement.
Friday Kessler, who graduated from Heartland’s Adult Education program in 2024 and is currently pursuing a college degree at HCC, has been selected as Illinois’ 2025 GED Grad of the Year.
Kessler was nominated for the award by Heartland Adult Ed instructor Diane Powers, who cited the many obstacles her student had to overcome in gaining a high school equivalency certification.
At age 15, Friday Kessler dropped out of school after facing bullying that led to panic attacks and mental health challenges.
“Like many young learners, Friday began school with hope. That hope was nearly extinguished by bullying, mental health challenges, and addiction. But through determination and grit, Friday reclaimed their future,” said Powers.
The student credits the decision to enroll in the Adult Education program as a pivotal moment in their life.
“Getting my GED turned my life around,” said Kessler. “Everyone (in the program) was kind and patient with one another, and my instructor was understanding about my mental health needs.”
Heartland’s Adult Education department offers courses for High School Equivalency (GED), English as a Second Language, and Academic English Language Programs for those seeking to enhance their careers and transition into college courses.
As an Adult Ed student, and now as a college student at Heartland, Kessler engaged with the student PRIDE group and currently serves as an officer in the organization. They also partnered with Prairie Pride and Bradley University to help plan for a mobile health clinic scheduled to serve students and community members on Heartland’s campus.
Kessler was presented the Grad of the Year Award at the 2025 GED Conference in Chicago on August 5.
