Computer Networking Information

  • If the world of technology and its interconnectedness inspires you, consider HCC's Computer Networking program. You'll learn how to maintain local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs) and intranets. Hands-on experience and real-world application is emphasized.

  • Important qualities you'll need to be successful in computer networking include strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills. The ability to multi-task will also be essential.*

  • As a graduate of HCC's Computer Networking program, you'll have a variety of options available to you. You may seek immediate employment upon graduation, or continue your education. Four-year degree options include computer science, information technology, industrial technology and management information systems.

    The outlook for employment in the IT field is very strong. The average entry-level salary for network administrators ranges from $38,000 to $45,000.*

  • 1. Earn an Associate in Applied Science

    Associate in Applied Science Degree in Computer Networking Technology

    The Associate in Applied Science Degree in Computer Networking Technology prepares you for a variety of entry-level positions. Typical job titles include Network Technician, Assistant Network Administrator, Wireless Technician and PC Technician. You may select an area of emphasis such as Cisco, Microsoft or Linux. Upper-level courses are available in the advanced Cisco, Security, wireless and VoIP. You'll learn to install, configure and maintain networks using state-of-the-art hardware and software. This option prepares you to sit for a variety of professional certifications. These include Cisco CCNA, Microsoft MCP/MCSE, A+, Linux+, Network+, CCENT and CCNAS.

    2. Earn a Certificate

    Computer Network Cisco Academy Certificate

    Completion of the Computer Network Cisco Academy Certificate results in a basic understanding of networking, routers and switches, as well as fundamental knowledge of LAN and WAN operation. You'll also develop experience in cabling, routing, IP addressing, routing protocols and network troubleshooting. In addition to Cisco Certified Networking Certification exam objectives, this certificate covers topics to enhance your overall understanding of the networking industry. Upon completion, you'll be prepared for entry-level positions in the field.

    Computer Networking Cyber Security Certificate

    This certificate prepares students for entry-level positions in the field of computer networking cyber security. Successful completion of this certificate results in a basic understanding of the core security concepts and skills needed to monitor, detect, analyze and respond to cybercrime, cyberespionage, insider threats, advanced persistent threats, regulatory requirements, and other cybersecurity issues facing organizations. The skills developed in this certificate prepares students for a career in the rapidly growing area of cybersecurity operations working in or with a security operations center (SOC) in entry-level job roles such as: Security Analyst and Incident Responder.

    Computer Support Specialist Certificate

    The Computer Support Specialist Certificate prepares you with basic skills required to install, maintain and support PCs in the workplace. This certificate may be applied toward further studies in electronics, networking or computer technology.
