Discover Heartland. Discover... Manual Machining
Career and Technical Education
Machinists work with precision cutting machines to produce extremely accurate mechanical components. As a Manual Machinist, you have a deeper understanding of what is going on: speeds & feeds, depth of cut, chip load, and surface finish with your mechanical components. Through this program, students will gain knowledge in metrology (precision measuring), hand tools, and their uses for machining and layout, along with common types of milling machines, surface grinders, lathes, and their accessories.

Heartland has many additional options to prepare you for a career in Machine Tool Technology. Other degree and certificate programs include:
“As automation becomes more and more central to manufacturing, technological skills do play a leading role. But there are dynamics between physical part-making, a machine’s capabilities, and programming and modeling software that still require an understanding of manual practices.” Don Sears, "The Value of Manual Machining in Today’s Manufacturing"
