Geography Information

  • If you're curious about things like culture, politics and different regions of the earth, you'll enjoy studying geography. By successfully completing an associate degree with an emphasis in geography you'll explore:

    • how history, culture, and human activities are affected by the physical features of Earth and its atmosphere
    • processes operating in Earth's atmosphere, on and beneath its surface
    • the distribution of population, wealth, natural resources, and society's impact on the environment
    • how to communicate scientific ideas effectively both verbally and in writing
  • When studying Geography at Heartland, you'll take a virtual tour around the world in GEOG 101 and participate in collaborative projects to answer questions like "How fast is the world's population growing?" You'll learn about topics that impact our planet, such as water resources or climate change, as well as global cultural and political issues.

  • Geography itself is a small occupation, employing only about 1,700 people in the U.S. However, by continuing your studies in geography at a fouryear institution, you will be prepared for employment in a diverse array of fields. A background in geography lends itself to employment in positions like:

    • GIS Specialist
    • Climatologist
    • Environmental or Transportation Management
    • Urban Planner
    • Community Development

    * Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014-15 Edition, Geographers, on the Internet at (visited April 14, 2014).

  • Earn your Heartland degree and transfer to a four-year college or university:

Associate in Arts - Concentration in Geography

If you plan to complete the first two years of study at Heartland and then continue your studies as a geography major at a four-year institution in Illinois, the Associate in Arts (AA) transfer preparation program is the path for you.
