It's not possible for all students to be away for a semester! This program is designed for a shorter 2-week period to allow more students the ability to travel abroad, while still providing an in-depth cultural experience. 

Program Description:

Riveria organises vocational education and training. The main campus is located to Joensuu, which is the capital of North Karelia. Annually Riveria has around 15,000 students hosts many foreign students per year. Riveria offers over 130 different qualifications in industry, construction, transport, nature and environment, business, wellbeing and health, education and culture, and services.

Internationalisation is an essential part of the diversely growing community in North Karelia where Riveria College is one of the major promoters of student and education professional exchange programmes.
Exchange students can have professional training in Finnish companies under the guidance and supervision of our teachers.

About Joensuu, Finland:

As the regional capital city, Joensuu is home to three higher education institutions – the North Karelia University of Applied Sciences, the University of Eastern Finland and the HUMAK University of Applied Sciences, as well as the vocational training school Riveria. The city is nearly 100,000 population with major businesses in metal, wood, and forestry industry.

Academics:

Students enroll in INDP 297: Independent Study (3 credits).

No previous Finnish language is required.

Room and Board:

Holiday Linnunlahti offers 18 spacious semi-detached apartments of 63 m² in size. In addition to a bedroom, a kitchen and a loft, each apartment has its own sauna. The apartments are equipped with bed linen, cooking equipment, a flat screen TV, radio as well as free wireless internet access.

Activities:

 

Students in this short program will experience a mixture of class observations, site visits to job sites such as John Deere, as well as take cultural trips to places like Koli National Park, white water rafting and a baseball game. Specific itinerary will change each year, so please contact the program coordinator listed below.

Eligibility:

  • 18 years or older
  • 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Completion of at least 12 hours of college-level coursework by the time of departure
  • Completion of one college writing course (commonly known as English Composition I and/or II, or its equivalent) with grade of B or better, by the time of departure
