Math Information

  • Learn to solve real-world problems with math! Whether you're interested in economics, science, engineering, physics or business, you'll benefit from completing an associate in science degree with an emphasis in mathematics. Your courses will help you:

    • apply mathematics to creatively and appropriately model and solve problems
    • critically evaluate and analyze information
    • effectively communicate mathematical ideas and solutions verbally and in writing
  • Not all mathematicians are the same. Applied mathematicians use theories and techniques, like mathematical modeling, to solve practical problems. Theoretical mathematicians do research to identify and resolve unexplained issues in mathematics.

  • Employment in math related fields is projected to grow by about 31% from 2021 to 2031. That's much faster than the average for all occupations.*

A strong background in mathematics increases employment opportunities in many fields. By continuing your education at a four-year institution you can prepare for roles such as a(n):

    • Actuary
    • Statistician
    • Computer Programmer or Systems Analyst
    • Database Administrator
    • Software Engineer
    • Teacher
    • Financial Analyst or Advisor

Some jobs require advanced degrees in mathematics or a related discipline. A double-major in mathematics and another related discipline is particularly desirable to many employers.

  • Earn your Heartland degree and transfer to a four-year college or university:

Associate in Science - Concentration in Mathematics

If you plan to complete the first two years of study at Heartland and then continue your studies as a mathematics major at a four-year institution in Illinois, the Associate in Science (AS) transfer preparation program is the path for you.
