Engineering Information

  • Phones, bridges, airplanes, roads - all of these are essential for our everyday life. None of them would exist without engineers! These professionals apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and commercial uses.

By successfully completing an Associate in Engineering Science (AES), you will have the ability to:

    • interpret and apply basic principles and laws governing the natural world
    • creatively apply mathematics to solve problems
    • critically evaluate and analyze information
    • communicate ideas and solutions effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Most entry-level engineering positions require a bachelor's degree in one of the engineering fields, but some jobs like civil engineering technicians and drafters require only an associate degree. Heartland Community College has a small number of partnership programs where you can earn your Associate in Engineering Science (AES) as a first step, then go on to complete your bachelor's degree at a regional four-year institution.

  • Completing this degree program will allow you to transfer to a four-year college, where you can focus on a specialty within the field. These include but are not limited to chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineering.

The starting salaries for engineers are among the highest of all college graduates. Overall job opportunities in engineering are expected to be good. Depending on the specialty chosen, employment is projected to grow from 3% to 10% from 2021 to 2031.*

    Associate in Engineering Science

If you plan to complete the first two years of study at Heartland and then continue your studies as an engineering major at a four-year institution in Illinois, the Associate in Engineering Sciences (AES) transfer preparation program is the path for you.
