Eligibility
- Minimum of a 3rd grade reading and math
- History of special education services
- Ability to actively participate in course through effective advocacy skills, initiative, and clear communication skills
- Sufficient emotional stability
- Desire to take credit-seeking courses or become more gainfully employed
Apply to HALO
To be considered for the HALO Transition Year, applicant should:
- Schedule a Campus Visit
- Complete and submit all Application Materials
Application Materials:
- HALO Application
- HALO Transition Student Interest Questionnaire
- HALO Transition Parent/Guardian Questionnaire
- 2 HALO Recommendation Forms
- 1 from an education source other from employer, community agency, or other
- HALO Graduates within the last 3 years do not need to submit a form from an educator
- Official High School Transcripts (if not on file)*
- Official College Transcripts (if applicable)*
- Junior Year IEP (if not on file)*
- HALO Exemption Request (PDF) (optional)
The application, questionnaires and recommendation form(s) will be sent to HALO automatically upon submition. All other application materials can be sent via email to halo@heartland.edu or dropped off at the HALO offices. Those marked with an * can be attached digitally to the application, or they can be submitted separately. All materials must be submitted by July 6, 2026.
All applicants are processed on a first come first serve bases and no priority will be given to applicants. When all components of the application have been received, a HALO staff member will follow up to schedule an interview with the student and family to ensure the program is a good match for the student's needs and goals. Completion and submission of the application does not guarantee admission into the HALO Transition Year.
