Eligibility
- Minimum of a 3rd grade reading and math
- History of special education services
- Ability to actively participate in course through effective advocacy skills, initiative, and clear communication skills
- Sufficient emotional stability
- Desire to take credit-seeking courses or become more gainfully employed
Application Process
The first step in the application process is to set up a campus visit.
The application checklist (PDF) will help families to ensure full completion of an application packet (available Spring 2025).
HALO Graduates (within the last three years)

Non-HALO Graduates or HALO Graduates of more than 3 years

All application materials can be sent via email to halo@heartland.edu or dropped off at the HALO offices. All materials must be submitted by July 7, 2025.
All applicants are processed on a first come first serve bases and no priority will be given to applicants. When all components of the application have been received, a HALO staff member will follow up to schedule an interview with the student and family to ensure the program is a good match for the student's needs and goals. Completion and submission of the application does not guarantee admission into the HALO Transition Year.
