August 2024
Back to campus. Back to campus news.
Highlights

Party Like It's 1927
If you spent part of your summer driving through the Ag Complex parking lot on your way to your real parking lot (IYKYK), you might have noticed a new, or rather old, addition to the Ag Complex grounds. Sitting on the west side of the building is a 1927 McCormick-Deering tractor donated to Heartland by adjunct faculty member Dave Bishop. Thanks to the Lincoln area FFA and the Lincoln Community High School metal fabrication class, the nearly century-old machinery was restored to its former glory before making its new home on Heartland’s campus. For those employees who didn’t spend a few months taking the scenic route to work, make sure you stop by and check out this cool piece of farming history.

Big League Talent
Two former baseball Hawks left the nest and landed in the big leagues. Sam Atonacci and Ben Hartl were both selected in the 2024 Major League Baseball draft. Antonacci, who transferred to Coastal Carolina after leaving Heartland, was chosen in the 5th round by the Chicago White Sox. Hartl was selected in the 14th round by the Texas Rangers after having attended college in Kansas.

New Faces in Athletics Places
The Athletics Department welcomed three new coaches this summer. CJ Hamilton was tapped as head coach for the women’s and men’s cross country teams. He takes over the successful program from Ty Wolf, who retired last spring. Cole Belcher will lead the Hawk Esports team. The Esports team, who recently captured multiple national titles, have competed in League of Legends, CoD, Rocket League, Street Fighter 6, Mario Kart 8 1v1, Overwatch 2, Fortnite Build, Hearthstone, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, NBA2k, and Madden. Krystal Goodman steps into the head softball coach role. She comes to Heartland from Radford University in Virginia. Goodman also serves as a Success Coach.

A-maze-ing Fun for Heartland Hawks
Some people get to see their name in lights, but only a special few get to see their name in corn. HCC is one of those few. Due to a partnership with a valued community partner, Hunter Hawk will be the subject of this fall’s corn maze at Rader Family Farms. The maze was created using precision planting techniques and covers 10 acres. It opens September 7th for your wayfinding pleasure.

Livin' Large
Get your selfie poses ready because a new photo opp is now on campus. Just in time for commencement season last spring, the College acquired a set of life-sized H-C-C letters. The new letters are movable and will be on display, weather permitting, at various locations around campus. Keep an eye out for them on the Quad on nice days. So get your cameras ready...but maybe avoid the duck-lip pose.

Social Superstars
We’re kind of a big deal on social media. Well, maybe a medium-sized deal. Regardless, we have some loyal followers and we’d like to recognize a few. Shout out to Stephanie Kratz for being our Social Media Superstar on Facebook and Chris Downing on his Social Media Superstar status on LinkedIn. Both loyal followers came away with an HCC prize. Wanna win a prize of your own? Follow, like, comment, and share on our HCC social media flagship accounts.

The (Tik)Talk of Campus
The rumors are true — by popular demand, Heartland is now on TikTok. In addition to finding fun ways to share important campus information with our students, you might see a colleague wrapping another in toilet paper, learn if a hot dog is a sandwich, hear about what people were reading this summer, and maybe catch an alum try their hand at breakdancing. You never know what you might find on HeartlandTok.
Still to come...
