Prior Learning
Heartland Community College recognizes students’ learning gained in and outside of the
classroom. Credit may be awarded for previously completed coursework, prior experiences, exams or licensures/certifications. Students should check with all transfer institutions to determine if such credit will transfer.
In accordance with state and federal guidelines, to earn a degree, students must complete at
least twenty five percent of required coursework at Heartland (excluding prior learning options
listed below). Prior learning can be demonstrated in various ways and Heartland recognizes the
following prior learning options.
Not sure what type of Prior Learning you might have? Take a short survey to see what prior learning options may be applicable to you.
Some prior learning options that you may have may not fit your program plan. See below for more information on credit acceptance.
Credit Acceptance
In order for prior learning credit to be posted to an account, students must be in a degree seeking program. The Records Office will only post prior learning credit relevant to your degree. Posting irrelevant credit could negatively impact your financial aid and/or veterans benefits. Please contact Financial Aid for more information at FinAid@heartland.edu
Up to 50% of required credits toward the student’s declared degree or certificate program may be
earned as Prior Learning Credit, including Military Credit, State Seal of Biliteracy, Proficiency Exam,
Industry-Recognized Credential, State-Awarded Credentials, and Portfolio Assessment. Of which, no
more than 25% of required credits toward the student’s declared degree or certificate program may be
earned through Advanced Placement, College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), and International
Baccalaureate (IB).
