What is PATH? 

The Pipeline for the Advancement of the Healthcare Workforce (PATH) grant expands opportunities for students to begin and/or advance their careers in healthcare. Eligible students that are enrolled at Heartland Community College receive academic support, success coaching, and financial compensation.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible to receive support by the PATH grant, prospective students must be part of the following populations:

  • Incumbent workers who are already in the workforce and looking to continue their education and advance their careers in the nursing or healthcare pathway in Illinois.

  • New, entering students on a nursing or healthcare pathway with an identified need for support.

  • Low-income, first-generation, and minority students as a subset of both of the aforementioned target population categories.

What PATH Provides 

Going to school can be a challenge for some and PATH is here to help alleviate the unique challenges our students may face. Stipends are available for eligible students that can be used to cover costs including:

  • Tuition and fees

  • Books and supplies

  • Transportation

  • Food and groceries

  • Housing expenses

  • Child care/dependent care assistance

  • Loanable laptop and Wi-Fi hotspot

  • Tutoring services

  • Career skills trainings

Emergency Medical Services

Heartland Community College and the McLean County Area Emergency Medical Services have teamed up to offer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses. Whether you want to acquire the EMT Basic certification or continue on and obtain the EMT Paramedic certification, Heartland and the MCAEMS have the courses that you need.

Nurses advocate for patients' needs, be they physical, mental, or cultural and teach patients to care for themselves so that well-being will continue in the home.  Nurses are continually learning so they may keep their skills sharp in an ever-evolving field and contribute as members of a broad health care service team.

Physical Therapy Assistant

If you're looking for a career that's physically active and allows you to help improve the quality of life for patients, the Physical Therapist Assistant program is an outstanding option. As a physical therapist assistant (PTA) you help people who have limited use of their bodies regain strength, balance, flexibility and mobility. Working under the supervision of a physical therapist, you perform various assessments, exercises and treatments. 

This intensive two-year program in human movement and rehabilitation prepares you to work under the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist.

Radiography

Radiography is a high-tech, high-touch medical profession that uses cutting edge technology to image the human anatomy for diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease.

The Radiography program is a two-year degree program that prepares students for an occupation in the professional field of medical radiography (x-ray technology). Related imaging modalities include computed tomography, angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and mammography.

Medical Assistant

Medical assistants (MA) are healthcare professionals trained to work in a physician’s office/clinic both administratively and clinically. They are essential for the smooth workflow of the office. The MA program will work to develop skills including insurance and billing; assisting physicians with procedures, blood draws and specimen collection; preparing patients for examination. 

Medical assistant is a growing profession that has the ability make a difference in medical offices, clinics, and medical and diagnostic laboratories where this role is very much in demand.

Phlebotomy

Phlebotomy prepares students new to healthcare professions and those with experiences in other fields or programs to collect blood and other samples from patients and perform fundamental laboratory tests.  Students will receive instruction and clinical experience in venipuncture, capillary sticks, and other basic laboratory skills.   

After successful completion of this class, you’ll gain Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) credentials through the National Healthcareer Association®.
